03/28/2007

And the highly anticipated update. We are 18 hours of the vent............... Some excitement though. Last night I called at 10 p.m. and the nurse said that they did a chest x-ray and she did her assessment and he was collapsed down a little and requiring 55% to 60% oxygen. She was going to try and wean a little and his CO2 was 92. I figured reintubation was imminent. The doctor decided to go down on the pressure a bit in case he had air trapping, they did another breathing treatment, and they also had to change his CPAP tube which was very clogged. His repeat CO2 was 72 (again, not great but acceptable for Emery.) This morning's CO2 was 73. No chest x-ray yet. They even moved the jet vent out of his room because another baby needed it. I asked 'what if he's going back on it?' She said not to worry, they'd get another one. I got very nervous assuming that we had made no progress, but it looks like we've made a little. Thank you so much for your prayers. Please keep praying! Any time off the vent is good.
